I am considdering to buy the commercial version 3.0 when it will be out. However I would like to start experimenting with current community version. I am interested if I can preserve all work done on the community version  when I will upgrade to the commercial version.

Or maybe is better to wait until the new version is out?

What's your majority work? If categories and products then they are should be perserved just fine. If custom pages or CMS, then it's better to wait until the new version since there will be the completely new page engine and page editor.
