When looking at a full article, it shows a bread crumb trail at the top of the article.  If I wanted to remove it, could I safely do this by removing the reference to the 'MainSiteMapPath' in the advanced edit block container'?

It looks something like this:

Yes, you could remove the exact %%BlockRef,MainSiteMapPath%% in advanced edit box. Please don't touch others.
