Main area/page to show category images and provide drill down to products

Main area/page to show category images and provide drill down to products
I have been asked if there is a standard way of listing category images in the main area - say 4 images per row and with multiple rows. Each should be linked to the under lying sub-categories or if there are no sub-categories a list of products should be displayed.

You can just change the category page web\store\category.ascx to show the sub-category images. Use your favorite grid contorl (ListView to my taste) to render the sub-category images.
